Export Guide: Importing Handicrafts from India
Documentation You Will Receive
A standard export shipment includes a Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading (or Airway Bill), Certificate of Origin, and, where applicable, GOTS/OEKO-TEX or other requested certifications.
Shipping Modes
Ocean freight (FCL or LCL) is standard for rugs, furniture, marble, and bulk textile orders. Air freight is used for smaller, time-sensitive, or sample shipments at a higher per-kg cost.
Typical Lead Times
Production lead time ranges from 3-4 weeks (textiles, tote bags) to 5-7 weeks (hand-knotted rugs, large marble pieces), plus 3-6 weeks of ocean transit depending on destination port.
Import Duties and Compliance
Import duty rates vary by destination country and product HS code. We can provide the HS code for any product line so your customs broker can confirm applicable duty and compliance requirements in your market.
Working with a Freight Forwarder
For FOB orders, you will need a freight forwarder to handle ocean/air booking, destination customs clearance, and inland delivery. We can recommend forwarders with experience handling Indian handicraft exports if needed.
